Voyager Technologies is seeking a Thermal Engineer II to support the design, build, test, and operation of thermal control systems for spacecraft, including lunar landers and surface power systems. This hybrid role reports to the Propulsion and Thermal Systems Manager within the Engineering Department in Pittsburgh, PA.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, integration, testing, and operation of thermal control systems for spacecraft, lunar landers, lunar surface power systems, lunar rovers, and related space hardware
- Create conceptual and detailed designs of spacecraft thermal system components
- Build and run component and spacecraft thermal models to guide design and operational decisions
- Develop specifications for vendor-supplied components and validate performance
- Support spacecraft assembly in cleanroom environments
- Conduct thermal vacuum chamber (TVAC) testing of components and support external thermal testing
- Train in mission operations procedures and provide real-time mission operations support
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or similar Engineering with 2+ years of thermal technologies experience, OR Master's degree with related thermal experience
- Proficient understanding of thermal-fluid engineering fundamentals
- Experience with thermal-fluid system design software (Thermal Desktop, Ansys Thermal, or Amesim preferred)
- Proficiency in scientific programming languages (Python, C/C++, Matlab, Fortran)
- Strong communication and technical presentation skills
- Ability to work independently and engage in technical discussions
Preferred qualifications include CAD proficiency (SolidWorks), TVAC testing experience, Computational Fluid Dynamics expertise (Ansys FLUENT/CFX), space/lunar systems experience, and thermal control component design experience (heaters, sensors, radiators, heat pipes, multi-layer insulation).
Travel is occasional and periodic with project needs (up to one week). Physical requirements include ability to lift up to 25-50 pounds. ITAR access required.
