Otter is a software platform that helps restaurants succeed in online food delivery. The company powers delivery operations for major brands including Chick-fil-A, Ben & Jerry's, KFC, and Eataly, addressing a rapidly growing market (US online food delivery expanded from $10B to $100B in 5 years). As a Software Engineer on the Customer Lifecycle team, you'll build core platform systems that every other team at Otter depends on. Your responsibilities include: • Architect and own the merchant platform: core services and data models for stores, facilities, brands, and entitlement-driven configuration that determines merchant access levels • Design onboarding services that reliably take restaurants from signup to live order-serving without manual intervention • Build backend systems for self-serve growth, enabling restaurants to adopt Otter through signup, activation, and conversion flows without sales involvement • Design offboarding and lifecycle cleanup processes to ensure clean system shutdown when merchants leave, preventing unnecessary costs • Own services end-to-end: design, build, instrument, debug, and continuously improve reliability and performance Required qualifications include proficiency in Java or Go for production backend services, solid understanding of distributed systems and microservices architecture, experience with REST/gRPC APIs, database design and optimization (PostgreSQL, CockroachDB), and production service operations experience. Nice-to-have skills include workflow orchestration (Temporal, Cadence), event-driven architectures (Kafka), authentication/authorization/entitlements systems, API modernization experience, marketplace or merchant platform background, and cloud/container expertise (AWS, GCP, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes). The role is based in Mountain View with five-day-per-week onsite requirements. You'll work in a collaborative environment with experienced colleagues, supporting restaurant success through innovative platform development.
