Atoms is building Physical AI—real-world robots for industries including food, mining, and transport. The company integrates hardware, software, AI, operations, and manufacturing to deploy autonomous systems at scale.
As Staff Engineering Technician for Vehicle Integration and Test, you will own the complete build process for development vehicles at Atoms' SF headquarters. This is a hands-on technical leadership role that bridges hardware engineering, manufacturing, and field operations.
Key responsibilities:
- Establish and maintain vehicle build standards, workmanship criteria, checklists, and sign-off procedures
- Design and fabricate fixtures, jigs, and kitted assemblies to enable repeatable, efficient builds
- Manage fleet configuration control and hardware revision tracking across all development vehicles
- Serve as final technical escalation for cross-disciplinary vehicle failures spanning mechanical, electrical, and firmware layers
- Drive design-for-manufacturability and design-for-serviceability improvements with hardware and autonomy teams
- Plan and execute retrofit campaigns, including tooling, parts procurement, and downtime scheduling
- Train and mentor junior and senior technicians, establishing workmanship standards and technical procedures
- Monitor build metrics (time, defect rates) and implement continuous improvements
- Represent shop constraints and capabilities in program planning
- Maintain shop facilities for assembly and production work
Required qualifications:
- 8+ years hands-on experience in vehicle integration, prototype build, or electromechanical systems
- Demonstrated ownership of a build process from conception to execution
- Deep expertise in wire harness design and vehicle electrical systems (architecture, connectors, grounding)
- Experience managing configuration control across vehicle fleets or prototype families
- Ability to lead independent debug work and recognize escalation points
- Track record of raising technical standards through training, review, and documentation
- Capacity to manage multiple simultaneous projects
- Physical capability to safely lift 50+ lbs and stand for extended periods
Desirable experience: autonomous vehicles, EVs, motorsport, aerospace, heavy equipment, high-voltage safety, CAN tooling, vehicle bus analysis, Linux/command line, Solidworks or CAD, fabrication skills (machining, welding, 3D printing).
