Salary: USD 211,000 - 248,000 / annual
Chime, a financial technology company, is seeking a Tech Lead Manager to lead one of its Trust & Safety engineering teams. The role combines people management with hands-on technical contribution, managing a squad of 4-5 engineers while remaining an active code contributor.
Key responsibilities include hiring and developing engineers, conducting 1:1s and career coaching, owning squad delivery end-to-end from sprint planning through operational health, and writing/shipping production code alongside the team. You'll set the technical direction and quality bar for your squad, either by working with a dedicated tech lead or taking on that role yourself. The position emphasizes leveraging AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) to increase both personal and team leverage while establishing sustainable practices.
You'll partner closely with Product and Design on scope, prioritization, and quarterly planning, surfacing technical dependencies early. As the squad's cross-functional point of contact, you'll coordinate dependencies and may carry product strategy conversations if a PM isn't dedicated to your squad. Additional responsibilities include identifying and advocating for addressing technical debt, ensuring quality and performance, maintaining healthy on-call and incident-response culture, building growth paths for engineers toward IC or TLM roles, and contributing to broader engineering initiatives.
Required qualifications include 2+ years of people management experience, current hands-on coding ability with a commitment to continuing code contribution, demonstrated track record using AI-assisted development tools with measurable team impact, experience coaching team members on execution and career progression, and strong cross-functional collaboration skills. Technical experience with Ruby, React Native, distributed systems, AWS services, and service-oriented architectures is preferred.
