Join Cloudflare's R2 Gateway team to build and operate the S3-compatible API gateway that powers Cloudflare's object storage platform. R2 is a rapidly growing service offering developers durable, reliable storage with zero egress fees integrated into Cloudflare's global network.
You'll own the request-facing layer of R2, responsible for the API surface that handles authentication, request routing, rate limiting, and coordination between clients and R2's storage and metadata layers. This role sits at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems, storage infrastructure, and edge computing.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, implement, and operate the S3-compatible API gateway serving every R2 operation with correctness, low latency, and S3 API compatibility
- Build and operate production services on Cloudflare Workers and Kubernetes handling high-throughput traffic with strong availability guarantees
- Own the complete request path end-to-end: authentication, authorization, routing, rate limiting, and error handling
- Deliver projects from design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production monitoring
- Continuously improve reliability, performance, and observability; reduce operational toil
- Participate in on-call rotations, drive incident resolution, and write postmortems
- Leverage AI tools extensively to accelerate development, debugging, and operational tasks
- Collaborate across teams on API contracts, capacity planning, and cross-cutting initiatives
You should have strong programming skills in Rust, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages, with experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems on the request path. Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (object storage, HTTP/API gateways, edge computing), high-throughput API design, and reliability/observability practices is expected. Experience with S3 API, Cloudflare Workers, or edge computing platforms is a strong plus. Comfortable using AI coding tools as part of daily workflow.
