Docker is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical direction of the networking stack powering Docker's Sandboxes platform. This role combines deep infrastructure expertise with technical leadership of a small engineering team, directly enabling Docker's expansion into AI and security products. You will design, implement, and operate core networking services across local laptops and public cloud environments, building scalable infrastructure for microVM orchestration and multi-tenant agentic workloads. Key responsibilities include developing high-performance networking data- and control-plane components, ensuring network reliability and observability, collaborating with product and security teams, and participating in on-call rotation for production incident response. The ideal candidate brings 8+ years of experience building large-scale cloud or distributed systems with deep networking foundations. You should have a track record of driving technical consensus and delivering high-quality infrastructure software at scale. Required expertise includes microservices architecture, container networking, service mesh, policy enforcement, and container orchestration. Strong knowledge of kernel and user-space networking technologies (Linux networking, OVS/OVN, DPDK, eBPF) is essential, along with experience designing highly available, secure, and observable networking infrastructure. You'll need strong understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI) and scalability patterns, familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code tooling, and excellent problem-solving skills in distributed environments. A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience) is required. In your first 30 days, you'll onboard and deep-dive into Sandbox architecture for local and public-cloud infrastructure. Within 90 days, you'll develop a technical roadmap and provide leadership to your team. Over one year, you'll drive simplification of foundational networking infrastructure and establish repeatable engineering practices for quality and operational excellence.
