Carta is a connected platform and AI-native ecosystem for private capital, serving 55,000 companies and 1.8M+ equity holders across 160+ countries. The Middle Office team sits at the intersection of Carta's cap table and fund administration products, owning the critical workflows that occur after investment: portfolio company data collection, holdings valuation, fund modeling, and LP reporting. As a Staff Software Engineer in Middle Office, you will be a technical anchor for the business unit, taking long-term accountability for technical health and strategic direction across multiple domains. You'll work on a connected suite of products serving PE and VC firms, fund administrators, and institutional investors, with current focus areas including private equity workflows, AI-powered ingestion of portfolio company financials and KPIs, portfolio valuation and allocation models, waterfall and fund forecasting across complex multi-entity structures, and unified firm holdings visibility. Key responsibilities include navigating ambiguous, complex problems and breaking them into actionable paths for the organization; identifying and eliminating failure patterns across systems through architectural improvements; bridging technical gaps across cross-functional domains to align teams on major decisions; leading the charge in defining how AI tools are safely and effectively leveraged across engineering; and setting the vision for operational excellence while mentoring senior engineers. You should have 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong track record of high-level technical leadership. Expertise in distributed systems is essential. While the primary stack is Python/Django, React, and Postgres, you should be comfortable guiding technical direction across JVM languages, gRPC, and cloud-native AWS infrastructure. You lead through influence rather than authority, anticipate future technical roadblocks, and build systems that support long-term business growth.
