Ripple is building infrastructure for the Internet of Value—a network that moves money as fast as information moves today. Every payment flowing through the network passes through real-time financial crimes controls: sanctions screening, wallet risk analysis, transaction monitoring, and travel rule compliance. The Financial Crimes Engineering team builds and operates this critical layer.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will set technical direction for Ripple's compliance control plane—a vendor-agnostic, resilient system that enables the network to scale without compromising on compliance. This is a platform-level role where you own architecture that other teams build against, not just individual services.
Key responsibilities include:
- Architect the compliance control plane: real-time screening orchestration, resilience and observability layers, vendor-agnostic integration, and the decision/data plane
- Drive high-ambiguity technical problems end-to-end: multi-vendor failover, sub-second decisioning under load, regulator-grade auditability, and resilience across partial dependency failures
- Translate evolving regulatory obligations into durable engineering primitives and sequenced technical roadmaps
- Anticipate platform risks and scaling constraints before they become incidents
- Partner with senior leaders to align cross-functional objectives and shape how regulatory requirements become engineering reality
- Set standards for production ownership: observability, alerting, incident response
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers and act as a technical multiplier
You bring 8+ years building production backend systems with deep expertise in Java, Go, or Rust. You have a track record of owning architecture for complex distributed systems at scale—defining the design others build against. You demonstrate strong resilience and distributed-systems design instincts, excellent API design judgment, and proven skill navigating ambiguity in regulated environments. Experience in fintech, payments, identity, or compliance technology is a strong plus. You have working knowledge of Kubernetes, observability tooling (Grafana, OpenTelemetry), and cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), and a history of mentoring engineers.
