The Developer Experience team builds tooling and infrastructure that Samsara's engineers use daily. This Staff Software Engineer role sits at the intersection of developer productivity and AI-assisted development, helping define what it means to integrate AI coding agents into the engineering workflow at scale.
You'll set technical direction for a small, high-impact team working across CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and AI coding agents. Responsibilities include designing and building AI agents that automate coding, code review, test generation, release automation, and incident response; scaling developer tooling as the engineering org grows; standardizing practices across teams; raising technical standards through code review and mentorship; and partnering with engineering leadership on strategic bets.
The role requires 8+ years of software engineering experience with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership capacity. You should have 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems and 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams. Strong programming fundamentals and a CS degree or equivalent practical experience are essential.
Ideal candidates have shipped real work with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or custom agents), built developer platforms or internal tooling for large engineering orgs (hundreds of engineers+), and have a track record of measurably improving engineer velocity. Proficiency in Go, Python, TypeScript, or similar languages is valued. You should be genuinely curious, think of engineers as real people, work well collaboratively, and care about Samsara's mission of improving safety and efficiency in physical operations.
