The Identity team at Affirm is mission-critical, serving as the foundation of the customer journey and global expansion strategy. The International Expansion Unit (IEU) owns Identity for all markets outside North America, placing this team at the center of Affirm's global strategy. In this Staff Software Engineer role, you will set technical strategy for your team on a year-long timescale and help tie it together with critical, business-impacting projects. You'll collaborate across product development with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks and trade-offs. You'll take ownership of your team's operations and availability by ensuring proper monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting are in place to support on-call efforts. You'll foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, advocating for them through writing and tech talks, and helping develop talent on your team through feedback, guidance, and leading by example. The scope includes building and expanding Identity Data Management, KYC Verification, and Decisioning capabilities while driving architectural changes that impact Identity services globally. You'll operate at the intersection of technical depth and regulatory complexity, directly impacting approval rates, conversion, and fraud exposure. Required: 8+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin. Extensive track record with highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes. Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating functionality through technical and execution planning. Strong ability to thrive in ambiguity, from low-level language idioms to large system architecture. Demonstrated growth trajectory with mastery of gathering and iterating on feedback. Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective global collaboration. On-call rotation is a requirement for this role.
