Urban Sky is a venture-backed aerospace startup designing, building, and operating stratospheric balloon systems for applications ranging from wildfire monitoring to urban mapping. The company works with government customers including NASA and the Department of War, launching flight vehicles weekly. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll own the design, build, deployment, and operation of the software powering Urban Sky's manufacturing operation. This is a full-stack MRP (Materials Resource Planning) system that tracks inventory, work orders, bills of materials, quality holds, and serialized parts from receiving through final integration—the operational backbone of balloon production. You'll work directly with end users: manufacturing technicians, logistics coordinators, quality inspectors, and finance teams. There is no product manager between you and them. You'll learn how physical parts flow through the building, understand pain points in quarantine workflows, and translate messy manufacturing processes into clean software. Your interfaces are built for shop-floor operators using tablets and barcode scanners, not consumers—touch targets, scanner integration, and work instructions matter more than landing-page polish. The role operates within an aerospace-regulated environment (AS9100 compliance). Every data mutation requires an audit trail, and serialized parts need end-to-end traceability. You'll move fast but with the discipline required when corrupted records can ground a flight. Prior MRP or manufacturing experience is not required, but you must be excited to learn a complex business domain alongside the code. As the company grows quickly, the scope of this role will evolve, and you'll have meaningful influence over what gets built next and how. You'll thrive in small teams solving ambiguous problems with real ownership in a fast-moving environment.
