GitLab is seeking a Staff Product Manager to lead product strategy for Planning, a core capability in their DevSecOps platform. This role focuses on reimagining how software planning works when people and AI agents collaborate—moving beyond traditional agile planning to explore how intent becomes actionable work, how work flows through development, and where human involvement is essential.
You will develop and defend a clear product vision for planning's future, translating it into concrete priorities and roadmap decisions. Key responsibilities include:
- Define planning's strategic direction as software development shifts toward human-AI collaboration, moving from open questions to actionable priorities
- Shape how users capture intent, decompose it into work, and determine which tasks can proceed autonomously versus requiring human oversight
- Evaluate how planning should connect software delivery to company priorities, business objectives, and budgets
- Share ownership of planning capabilities (work items, boards, specifications, portfolio planning) with a peer product manager, helping define scope division
- Partner with engineering and design to translate product direction into roadmap and workflow improvements
- Communicate recommendations clearly to senior leaders, challenge assumptions constructively, and lead the team through strategic pivots
The Planning team builds capabilities at the start of GitLab's development workflow, with decisions that cascade through the entire platform. You'll work alongside another product manager and collaborate with engineering and design. The hiring manager values fresh perspectives, constructive challenge of established approaches, and influence beyond your immediate scope.
GitLab's culture emphasizes AI as a core productivity multiplier, with all team members expected to incorporate AI into daily workflows. The company serves 50+ million registered users and over 50% of the Fortune 100.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience leading product strategy and execution for software development, developer tools, or planning products, with depth to make decisions in specialized areas
- Strong understanding of software development and DevOps workflows, including how planning decisions affect downstream delivery
- Ability to form and defend a product point of view in uncertain, changing markets while remaining open to different ideas
- Clear communication with technical teams and senior executives; experience constructively challenging leadership and building support for strategic direction
- Ability to connect forward-looking strategy to practical product decisions and collaborate across product, engineering, and design
