Sila Nanotechnologies is a next-generation battery materials company focused on powering the world's transition to clean energy. The company engineers and manufactures advanced battery materials that increase energy density while reducing size and weight, enabling smaller, more powerful batteries for consumer devices and electric vehicles. As a Staff Process Design Engineer on the Capital Projects team, you will be a key technical contributor responsible for developing and implementing first-of-its-kind, auto-scale battery material manufacturing facilities. This is a hands-on role spanning the entire process lifecycle—from initial feasibility and conceptual design through commissioning and operation. You will serve as the main point of contact for process engineering inquiries, with a focus on bulk material handling systems including conveying, blending, screening, and packaging. Your responsibilities include executing design projects, shepherding unit operation designs through detailed engineering phases, and generating critical documentation such as Heat and Material Balances (HMBs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and Process Control Narratives. You will lead and support process safety deliverables, including HAZOP recommendation closure, Management of Change (MOC) activities, safety system designs, and operational alarm management. You'll identify gaps in capital project execution, commissioning, and asset operation, then work with relevant teams to close them. This role requires close collaboration with Research & Development, Manufacturing, and EHS&S teams to meet Sila's manufacturing scaling objectives. Required qualifications include a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, plus 6+ years of industrial experience in process design, commissioning, and operations—preferably in powders, chemicals, or advanced materials manufacturing. You must have strong familiarity with regulatory and safety standards (NFPA, API, ASME, OSHA), proficiency in process modeling software (ASPEN, HYSYS), and hands-on experience with HMBs, equipment sizing, and P&ID development. Experience with control schemes, safety-critical instrumentation, pressure relief systems, and risk management protocols (MOC, HAZOP) is essential. You should be comfortable working independently as a technical contributor while collaborating effectively in multi-disciplinary teams, and willing to travel up to 50% during construction and commissioning phases, and 10% otherwise.
