Dandy is transforming the dental industry by building an operating system for dental practices globally. The company is seeking a Staff Mechatronics Engineer to join the Precision Robotics R&D team, responsible for developing the mechatronic architecture of next-generation Special Purpose Machines (SPM) for manufacturing custom-made dental prosthetics. In this hybrid South Bay role, you will own the complete mechatronic architecture for the SPM platform family, defining actuation, sensing, and motion-control approaches that shape the roadmap for years. You will architect and integrate complex robotic hardware systems—including precision actuators, sensors, and electromechanical subsystems—to meet micron-level reliability requirements for manufacturing. Your expertise in both additive (3D printing) and subtractive (milling, grinding, polishing) processes will inform the design of versatile, high-precision manufacturing platforms. Key responsibilities include setting technical standards for hardware design and validation (design reviews, tolerance analysis, FMEA, testing), leading rapid prototyping with rigorous structural and thermal analysis, and acting as the primary technical interface between mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software teams. You will influence long-range program goals by defining where automation capability needs to be in 2–3 years and what must be built or acquired. Required: 8+ years of machine-building experience in hardware, mechatronics, or robotics engineering with system-level architecture focus for production systems. You must have architected at least one complex electromechanical system from concept through production ramp, including field problem resolution. B.S./M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Robotics Engineering. Expert-level 3D CAD modeling, robotic kinematics/dynamics, actuation systems, sensor integration, and embedded systems knowledge required. Demonstrated technical leadership, mentoring capability, and ability to self-direct across teams in a high-velocity environment. ~20% travel to suppliers, manufacturing, and testing facilities. Bonus experience includes automation system integrator/OEM background, advanced motion control (PLC programming, high-performance controllers), laser interferometry, AOI/3D vision integration, FEA/CFD thermal and vibration analysis, custom brushless motor design, and ISO 10218/13482 robotic safety standards.
