Valar Atomics is building advanced nuclear power systems to enable clean, scalable energy for industrial applications, hydrogen production, and next-generation manufacturing. The company is developing factory-made, rapidly deployable reactor technologies with a pilot plant planned for Orangeville, Utah.
You will serve as a senior technical authority for nuclear instrumentation and controls (I&C) systems, with primary focus on neutron detection, detector signal processing electronics, and radiation monitoring equipment. This is a company-wide technical leadership role supporting reactor design, test operations, and safety-critical monitoring systems.
Key responsibilities include:
**Instrumentation & Detection Systems:**
- Lead design, specification, selection, and integration of neutron detectors (fission chambers, boron-lined detectors) and signal conditioning electronics (wide-range, source range channels)
- Develop detector response models and performance specifications
- Oversee vendor selection and qualification for detector systems and electronics
- Ensure detector systems meet nuclear industry codes and standards
**Control Systems & Safety:**
- Design and integrate reactor protection systems and radiation monitoring architectures
- Lead safety evaluations and compliance assessments for I&C systems
- Develop control logic and interlocks for reactor operations
- Support commissioning and operational testing of instrumentation systems
**System Integration & Standards:**
- Ensure all I&C systems comply with nuclear regulatory requirements and industry standards (10 CFR, IEEE, ASME)
- Lead cross-functional coordination with reactor design, operations, and safety teams
- Manage technical documentation, design reviews, and configuration control
- Mentor junior engineers on nuclear I&C best practices
This role requires deep expertise in nuclear instrumentation, detector physics, signal processing, and regulatory compliance. You will have significant autonomy and ownership over I&C strategy and execution.
