Honeycomb is seeking a Staff Field Reliability Engineer to serve as a technical leader and escalation point for the company's most complex customer situations. This role bridges platform engineering and customer-facing technical leadership, combining deep infrastructure expertise with strategic business impact.
You will own the architecture and operational standards for Honeycomb's managed services, including Refinery as a Service (RaaS) and Honeycomb Private Cloud (HnyPC). This includes designing Terraform modules, Helm charts, and deployment automation across multi-region AWS environments, setting technical direction for how Honeycomb instruments and monitors its own infrastructure, and driving capacity planning, scaling strategy, and cost optimization.
As the final technical escalation point, you'll resolve novel, high-stakes customer problems spanning distributed systems, Kubernetes, AWS networking (ALBs, PrivateLink, NLBs, VPCs), and service meshes—often in real time under revenue-critical pressure. You'll partner directly with customer SRE and engineering leadership on multi-week escalations and architecture redesigns tied to the company's largest relationships, and provide senior incident command for managed services.
You'll also shape Honeycomb's open source strategy in the OpenTelemetry ecosystem, representing the company at the community level in OpenTelemetry SIGs, identifying whitespace in the ecosystem that creates customer friction, and leading efforts to close those gaps. You'll build reference architectures, diagnostic frameworks, and playbooks that enable junior engineers to operate independently in situations that previously required staff-level involvement.
