Salary: USD 235,000 - 317,000 / annual
Adyen is a global financial technology platform providing payments, data, and financial products for enterprise customers including Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft. This Staff Engineer role focuses on financial products and requires deep technical leadership at scale.
You will design and build large-scale distributed systems that power financial products, with a platform mindset that generalizes complex processes into simple, flexible services supporting multiple product lines. The role demands hands-on technical contribution—particularly in Java—combined with strategic engineering leadership including mentoring, architecture decisions, and cross-functional collaboration.
Key responsibilities include:
- Architecting and implementing distributed financial systems at scale
- Mentoring engineers and shaping engineering strategy within the financial products domain
- Building platform abstractions that enable multiple product teams to move faster
- Collaborating across diverse stakeholders (product, operations, compliance, other engineering teams)
- Identifying technical problems and driving solutions proactively
- Maintaining hands-on coding involvement while guiding team direction
Required qualifications:
- 10+ years of hands-on software development in modern engineering environments
- 2+ years of experience in financial services, banking, or fintech
- Proven technical leadership experience including mentoring and strategy
- Deep expertise designing and building large-scale distributed systems
- Strong Java coding background
- Platform engineering mindset with ability to create generalized, flexible services
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills across cultures
- Self-starter mentality with problem-solving orientation
