ServiceNow is seeking a Staff Data Platform Software Engineer to join the Persistence team, which builds the backbone of the ServiceNow AI Platform. This role focuses on data access, reliability, scale, and intelligent transformation across the enterprise platform.
You will be a key technical contributor responsible for innovating data platform access for internal and external customers, pushing IO, transaction, and concurrency limits across relational, time-series, and columnar stores, and bringing more capability to developers and automation to end customers.
The Data Access team translates customer data requests from the ServiceNow platform into accurate database queries using a home-grown SQL generation engine. The team manages SQL generation for Trino, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and Oracle databases, as well as table management and database metadata.
In this role, you will:
- Work on core data architecture that touches every part of the product, ensuring quality, reliability, security, and performance
- Manage and enhance a complex codebase with quality and speed
- Deliver projects on time with quality, leading other engineers
- Set technical direction for key initiatives within the Data Access team, ensuring scalability and maintainability
- Collaborate with product managers to translate requirements into well-architected solutions, owning features from design through delivery
- Drive design and code reviews, championing best practices in performance, maintainability, and testability
- Develop and advocate for comprehensive test strategies covering functional, regression, integration, and performance aspects
- Contribute to a culture of continuous learning and engineering excellence
- Mentor junior and senior engineers to help them thrive in a complex codebase
- Learn new technologies quickly and develop platform technologies at scale
Required qualifications: 8+ years of software development experience with a Bachelor's degree (or 6+ years with Master's, or 3+ years with PhD). Expert-level Java development skills, advanced backend platform development experience, and expert-level understanding of object-oriented and modularized software design. Strong knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB, MS SQL Server, Trino), data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and performance optimization at scale. Experience with automated testing frameworks and CI/CD pipelines, cloud-based and distributed systems, and troubleshooting production issues. Track record of technical leadership and strong communication skills.
Nice-to-have: ServiceNow platform familiarity, RDBMS internals knowledge, database technology passion, Unix shell experience, DevOps environment experience.
