Valar Atomics is seeking a Staff Controls Software Engineer to develop, configure, test, and commission control system software for advanced nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities. This is a senior technical leadership role within the Instrumentation & Controls Engineering team, reporting to the Fuel Manufacturing group. You will own the full stack of industrial control systems including PLC and DCS programming (Rockwell ControlLogix/CompactLogix, Siemens S7/TIA Portal, Emerson platforms), SCADA and HMI application development, ISA-88 batch control sequences, safety logic programming on SIS platforms (GuardLogix, Siemens F-CPU, Triconex), alarm management per ISA-18.2, and historian configuration (OSIsoft PI, AVEVA PI, Ignition). You will also implement ISA-95 enterprise-control integration, including REST APIs and database interfaces between control systems and MES/ERP/LIMS systems. Key technical responsibilities include designing HMI displays per ISA-101 and High-Performance HMI principles, configuring industrial communication protocols (OPC-UA, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, DeviceNet), writing SQL and Python for data processing and test automation, and defining OT network architecture with cybersecurity controls per IEC 62443 and NIST SP 800-82. You will prepare and execute FAT/SAT/commissioning test plans and maintain comprehensive engineering documentation. Beyond individual contribution, this role carries senior responsibility for technical leadership of complex projects, contractor oversight, and mentorship of junior engineers. You will work in a team environment that values operator-focused design, data integrity, disciplined documentation, and a safety-first culture. The company is building the first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah to demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems can power the future of clean, high-temperature industrial energy.
