This is a Staff/Principal Engineer role—though Clay doesn't use traditional titles, everyone is called "Software Engineer," but this position explicitly targets those with prior Staff/Principal experience. The role is open across multiple specializations: product engineering, platform engineering, AI engineering, security, and developer experience.
You'll drive technical strategy and set direction for your domain(s), executing on complex, ambiguous projects that require busting through obstacles and leveraging influence across teams. You'll mentor and level up engineers through teaching, design reviews, code reviews, and modeling ownership and technical excellence. Your impact will shape architecture, process, and the overall effectiveness of the engineering organization.
Key responsibilities include big-picture thinking beyond immediate roadmaps and individual teams, executing on technically complex projects that may require cross-functional collaboration, and influencing the broader engineering culture through mentorship and leadership.
You should have a track record of outsized impact—whether that's creating leverage for entire organizations, building foundational systems that scale for years, launching revenue-generating products, or delivering exceptional product experiences. You're comfortable in startup/scale-up environments, have strong product intuition, and communicate nuanced ideas clearly across different audiences. You're empathetic, curious in disagreements, and avoid ego-driven decision-making.
Tech stack: TypeScript, React, Node.js, Python; AWS (Aurora/Postgres, ElastiCache/Redis, Docker, ECS Fargate, Lambda, OpenSearch); Terraform for IaC; GitHub, CircleCI, Netlify, Playwright; observability via CloudWatch, Datadog, Mezmo, Grafana. You should be familiar with this stack or able to learn quickly.
