Benchling is an AI platform for biotech R&D used by over 200,000 scientists globally, including major biopharma companies like Sanofi and Moderna. The company is rebuilding biotech for the AI era by embedding AI agents and models directly into scientific workflows.
You'll join a team focused on shipping AI agents that automate scientific work—from experiment design and data capture to analysis and report generation. These agents compress work that currently takes hours to weeks into automated processes. This is early-stage work; the team is rapidly iterating with customers, experimenting with new agent architectures, and defining best practices for AI-powered scientific tools.
Responsibilities include:
- Building end-to-end AI agents, from architecture design through production deployment
- Working directly with scientific customers to identify use cases, gather feedback, and evaluate agent performance
- Engineering across the full stack: LLM-powered backends (Python), modern frontends (React), and integrations within Benchling's applications
- Contributing to the agent platform's frameworks, tooling, and infrastructure
- Shaping Benchling's AI development practices and technical direction as the field evolves
You'll need 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building production systems, comfort across backend and frontend technologies, strong product instincts, and genuine curiosity about LLMs and AI agents. Prior biotech knowledge is not required, but a willingness to learn the domain is essential. The team values collaboration, rapid iteration, and working in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift quickly. This is a full-time, in-office role in San Francisco (Monday–Friday).
