OpenAI's Applied AI Engineering team is seeking an Applied AI Engineer focused on Codex to partner directly with leading engineering organizations and transform how software is developed using frontier AI capabilities. In this role, you will design, build, and deploy AI-powered software development workflows that improve how engineering teams plan, write, test, review, debug, and deliver software. You'll work hands-on in code to build prototypes, evaluation harnesses, reference implementations, integrations, and production accelerators—often using Codex itself as part of your development process. You'll help customers progress from promising experiments to reliable production workflows, sustained developer adoption, and scaled impact across their engineering organizations. Key responsibilities include: - Partnering with engineering leaders and developers to identify high-value opportunities and translate them into technical architectures, implementation plans, and measurable success criteria - Designing systematic approaches for evaluating AI coding systems using representative software engineering tasks, automated graders, production signals, and developer feedback - Making sound technical decisions across models, agents, tools, developer environments, integrations, reliability, observability, latency, cost, safety, and security - Diagnosing complex implementation challenges, reproducing failures, and driving technical blockers toward resolution - Leading technical deep dives, workshops, and hands-on enablement to help engineering teams adopt advanced AI coding workflows - Gathering high-fidelity insights from real-world Codex deployments and translating them into product proposals and technical requirements for OpenAI teams - Creating reusable architectures, tooling, examples, and technical patterns that accelerate future Codex deployments - Influencing customer engineering strategy by helping technical leaders understand how AI coding systems can reshape their software development lifecycle You should have a demonstrated track record of designing, building, and delivering software or AI systems in enterprise environments, taking systems from prototype to production. Relevant backgrounds include applied AI/ML engineering, forward-deployed engineering, software engineering, developer tooling, customer engineering, solutions architecture, or technical consulting. You'll need substantial personal contributions in code, architecture, evaluation, debugging, integrations, or production engineering. High proficiency in Python is required, with comfort across modern software development environments; experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, or other relevant languages is valuable. You should be an active user of AI coding tools with a strong point of view on how AI can improve developer productivity. The role is based in Tokyo with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is offered.
