Zoox is developing a full-stack autonomous mobility solution and robotaxi platform for urban deployment. The System Design and Mission Assurance (SDMA) team is responsible for constructing the safety case and fail-operational design for autonomous driving robots before public road deployment. In this role, you will serve as a System Safety Engineer focused on Sensing and Perception Systems. Your primary responsibilities include performing comprehensive safety analyses of complex hardware and software systems, developing system safety requirements and metrics, and ensuring safe, fail-operational, and reliable sensing capabilities for the autonomous vehicle platform. You will work across hardware and software domains, collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify failure modes, assess risks, and implement mitigation strategies. This role requires deep technical expertise in safety engineering principles, autonomous systems architecture, and sensor technologies. You will contribute to the development of safety documentation, hazard analyses, and validation strategies that support regulatory compliance and public deployment of the robotaxi solution. The position is ideal for an experienced engineer with a strong background in functional safety, SOTIF (Safety of the Intended Functionality), or similar safety-critical system design. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment where safety is paramount.
