Sage Health is building a care intelligence platform for senior living and skilled nursing communities. The role focuses on designing and evolving edge computing systems that connect hardware (cameras, sensors, nurse call systems, fall detection) deployed across thousands of senior care facilities with cloud infrastructure, enabling reliable operation even under poor network conditions and hardware variability.
You will own the architecture of Sage's edge device fleet and the cloud systems that orchestrate, monitor, and update them. Key responsibilities include: solving novel, ambiguous problems like resident location modeling and fall detection; building diagnostic tooling for remote troubleshooting of hardware in the field; reasoning simultaneously about network, hardware, and software layers; collaborating end-to-end with other teams; conducting code reviews and design discussions; and mentoring less experienced engineers.
The ideal candidate has 7+ years of professional experience building complex backend systems that evolved over time. You should be deeply comfortable in Linux/Unix environments beyond command-line basics, with demonstrated ability to debug systems and understand root causes. You need real depth in at least one programming language (Java, C++, Rust, Go, Python, C#) with strong fundamentals in memory, concurrency, and performance. Working knowledge of networking is essential—you can reason about device disconnections, mid-update failures, and connection anomalies without looking up basics. The company values demonstrable curiosity (side projects, open source, home labs, self-taught expertise) and proven ability to lead technical efforts from ambiguous problems to shipped outcomes, making tradeoffs under uncertainty. Years of experience matter less than depth, range, and hands-on systems work.
