Gatik AI is the leader in autonomous middle-mile logistics, operating Level 4 autonomous trucks commercially across major US and Canadian markets. As Senior Systems & Safety Engineer for Autonomy, you will own the functional safety lifecycle and overall system safety architecture for Gatik's autonomous driving stack. This is a critical role ensuring uncompromising safety across perception, localization, mapping, planning, controls, and fault management systems.
Key responsibilities include:
• Define and maintain the Functional Safety Concept (FSC) and Technical Safety Concept (TSC) for the Level 4 autonomous system in accordance with ISO 26262 (up to ASIL D).
• Lead system-level hazard analysis and risk assessment (HARA), System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), FMEAs, and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) across autonomy modules.
• Derive safety requirements from vehicle-level goals down to software components, allocating requirements to middleware, stack algorithms, and diagnostic monitors using tools like Jama/Jira.
• Architect fail-operational, fail-aware, and fail-safe fallback strategies, including degraded modes, trajectory fallback, and pull-over behaviors for Minimum Risk Maneuver (MRM) systems.
• Define and monitor Safety Performance Indicators (SPIs) and safety metrics to assess stack maturity and release readiness.
• Partner closely with Autonomy Software, Middleware, Infrastructure, and Systems teams to embed functional safety into agile development processes.
This is a full-time, onsite role (5 days/week) based in Santa Clara, CA. The ideal candidate holds a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Robotics, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or Aerospace Engineering, with demonstrated experience in functional safety, ISO 26262, and autonomous systems.
