Coinbase is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to own the technical strategy and architecture for core Exchange domains within the Institutional Everything Exchange platform. This role sets the architectural direction for the matching engine, order management, market data, and unified trading systems that process billions of dollars in daily volume. Key responsibilities include owning technical strategy and architecture for a core Exchange domain, driving multi-quarter initiatives from ambiguity through delivery. You will lead the design of ultra-low-latency, event-sourced trading systems spanning matching, risk, and market data across cloud and colocated environments. The role requires driving cross-team technical alignment across Exchange, Prime, and Derivatives, securing commitment from senior engineering and product leadership. You will set and inspect the quality bar across teams, including deterministic testing, failover design, incident leadership, and operational standards for 24/7 markets. While maintaining significant hands-on technical contribution, you will lead execution through other senior engineers and tech leads, and mentor L5-L6 engineers to build the next generation of technical leadership. Required qualifications include 10+ years of software engineering experience with significant ownership of production trading, exchange, or market-data systems at scale. Deep expertise in low-latency distributed systems and backend languages (Java, C++, Go) with JVM/Linux performance tuning is essential. Demonstrated architectural ownership of end-to-end trading platforms—order management, multi-venue connectivity, real-time risk—is required, not just single-component experience. Candidates must have a proven track record influencing technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority, and experience operating latency-sensitive systems in on-prem/colocated and cloud environments, including incident command and safe production change management. Genuine interest in crypto and institutional markets with ability to ramp quickly is expected; deep crypto experience is a plus. Responsible use of generative AI to maintain human oversight and deliver business-ready outputs is valued. Coinbase is a remote-first company with quarterly in-person working sessions called "surges." The role offers the ownership of a startup with the reach of a major fintech platform.
