Rocket Lab is seeking a Senior Spacecraft Propulsion Test Engineer to lead propulsion testing operations at their Long Beach facility. In this role, you will plan, prepare, and execute engine and propulsion component testing for spacecraft and subsystems used in missions ranging from interplanetary exploration to national security applications. You'll own the full testing lifecycle—from test planning and instrumentation through execution, data analysis, and reporting—while providing technical leadership and mentorship to team members.
Key responsibilities include setting and maintaining best practices for testing excellence, providing guidance and training on testing methodologies, reviewing and signing off on test plans and reports, and supporting risk-based decision-making for development challenges. You'll apply systems engineering principles to integrate testing activities with broader engineering efforts and communicate regularly with internal and external stakeholders. The role involves hands-on work with engine test facilities, hot fire testing of liquid rocket engines, and instrumentation using National Instruments or Beckhoff PLC systems.
You'll bring 5+ years of rocket engine test engineering experience or equivalent high-performance field background, with a Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, mechatronics, or related engineering discipline. Prior experience with engine test facilities, liquid rocket engine hot fire testing, instrumentation, automation, and data acquisition is required. Travel to test facilities and extended off-site work is expected.
Desirable qualifications include experience with hypergolic propellants, government approvals (NEPA, permitting), aerospace testing standards (vibration, thermal, vacuum, leak testing), Python for data analysis, and 1D fluid system modeling.
