Instacart is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Marketing Platform Tooling team, a critical backend infrastructure group responsible for powering all of Instacart's marketing capabilities. The team maintains two production-scale platforms: the Targeting Platform (TaaS), which manages approximately 46,000 segment definitions, and the CRM Messaging Service (CRMS), which sends roughly 8 million messages daily across Instacart and white-label retailers.
In this role, you will architect, build, and maintain high-quality backend systems for TaaS and CRMS, owning core workstreams from conception through production with significant independence. Key responsibilities include leading the CC API V3 to V4 migration, scaling CRM white-label capabilities to 80+ retailers, executing Project Lotus Phase 2, and developing self-serve ad hoc tooling. You'll play a central role in designing the Unified Marketing Backend (UMB), a composable platform serving as the shared foundation for all marketing infrastructure.
You'll own critical platform capabilities end-to-end, including real-time targeting, campaign health and observability, API and eventing integrations, and CRM white-label expansion. This work carries high visibility internally and with external retailer partners such as Sprouts, PFG, and Metro. Collaboration is essential—you'll work extensively with backend and full-stack engineers, Product, Design, and adjacent platform teams (MET/Martech, Treatment Serving, Retailer Storefront/Enterprise, Professional Services), plus external vendors like Braze and CDP tooling.
The environment is fast-moving; you'll balance ongoing platform stability with a growing H2 roadmap, reduce execution risk on two critical systems, and contribute to building a sustainable on-call rotation as the team scales.
Required: 5+ years backend software development with proven production systems at scale; proficiency in Ruby or Python (Go experience a plus); hands-on Rails or Pandas in production; experience designing scalable distributed systems with relational and NoSQL databases (Postgres, DynamoDB, Snowflake) and data pipelines; rigorous unit testing and independent problem-solving; strong cross-functional collaboration; Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science or equivalent.
Preferred: marketing technology platform experience (targeting, CRM, messaging, campaign tooling); eventing systems, real-time data processing, or composable architecture; third-party API integration at scale; comfort in fast-paced, high-ownership environments.
