AssemblyAI is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to bridge cutting-edge AI research and production-grade products. You'll own the full lifecycle of customer-facing APIs that expose new voice AI model capabilities—from prototype through launch and ongoing iteration. The role sits at the intersection of research and applied engineering, requiring you to partner closely with researchers to productionize techniques, turning notebooks and POCs into robust, low-latency, reliable services that scale to 1M+ API users. Key responsibilities include designing and shipping customer-facing APIs, scaling inference infrastructure to handle 1M+ monthly API calls, partnering with researchers to productionize new techniques, working with customers and applied teams to understand product usage patterns, and contributing across the full stack (backend services, inference infrastructure, SDKs, internal tooling). You'll need strong backend engineering experience, including building and supporting ML infrastructure and/or customer-facing APIs in production. The role requires comfort operating with ambiguity—research and product timelines don't always align—and genuine curiosity about AI/ML (you don't need to be a researcher, but should understand model behavior well enough to make sound engineering decisions). Strong collaboration skills are essential; you'll work daily with researchers, applied engineers, and customers with different contexts and priorities. AssemblyAI is a capital-efficient AI company with under 100 people generating ~$500K ARR per employee, ranking among the top 5 most revenue-dense teams in fast-growing AI. The company processes 1M+ hours of audio daily, powers 2B+ end-user experiences, and serves customers including Granola, Fireflies, Figure AI, and CallRail. The culture emphasizes meritocracy, real ownership, and minimal bureaucracy—no heavy planning processes or gatekeeping on tools and information.
