Handshake is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Frontend Platform team, a small, high-leverage group responsible for building the foundational systems that enable the entire frontend organization to ship high-quality experiences at scale.
You will own and evolve Handshake's design system, component libraries, frontend accessibility standards, CI/CD infrastructure, and developer tooling. Treating these capabilities as products for internal customers (frontend engineers, designers, product teams), you'll transform recurring problems into reusable solutions, establish thoughtful standards and paved paths, and create a frontend platform that scales with organizational growth.
Key responsibilities include: building and maintaining reusable TypeScript and React components, patterns, and APIs used across multiple applications; shaping the design system as a living product that balances consistency, accessibility, and flexibility; improving developer experience through clear local development, testing, build, and release workflows; leveraging AI tools as part of your engineering workflow for understanding code, prototyping, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation; building AI-enabled frontend workflows and agent-ready documentation for the broader organization; strengthening frontend infrastructure in CI/CD; embedding accessibility as a built-in capability; owning cross-cutting frontend capabilities that work consistently across applications; partnering with product engineers, designers, and product managers to understand needs and drive adoption; leading projects from problem definition through implementation and iteration; and raising the bar through design reviews, code reviews, technical writing, and mentoring.
You bring 5+ years of professional frontend development experience with deep expertise in TypeScript, React, and the modern frontend ecosystem, including browser fundamentals, frontend architecture, testing, and performance. You have hands-on experience building or maintaining reusable frontend libraries, design systems, or component platforms used by multiple teams. You've worked on both product and platform/infrastructure teams, understand different problem-solving approaches, and have a track record of turning ambiguous problems into simple, maintainable solutions. You excel at designing APIs and abstractions that are intuitive and extensible, communicate technical tradeoffs clearly, and operate with a customer mindset toward internal platform users. Experience with design systems focused on accessibility, Nx/Webpack/monorepo infrastructure, Storybook, visual regression testing, automated accessibility testing, frontend navigation/routing, and mentoring is valued.
