The Global Monitoring Service (GMS) App Team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead frontend development for a customized application serving Defense & Intelligence customers worldwide. This application provides daily, near-real-time monitoring and analytic insights on customer-defined sites built atop Planet's satellite data.
You will design and implement frontend features using React and TypeScript, develop and maintain web applications, and mentor other engineers through code reviews and technical discussions. You'll drive architectural decisions impacting the frontend, including component design and state management patterns, while collaborating with product managers and designers to deliver solutions. The role includes contributing to backend systems and APIs as needed, with primary focus on frontend ownership.
You bring 10+ years of relevant experience developing web applications, with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field. You are proficient with React and component-based architecture, experienced with JavaScript or TypeScript, and capable of leading feature implementation from discovery through deployment. You excel at improving team capabilities through code reviews and knowledge sharing, with demonstrated experience mentoring teammates on frontend best practices. You have deep understanding of HTML, CSS, and responsive design, experience with state management and data fetching, and familiarity with REST APIs.
Stand-out qualifications include experience with monorepo tooling or large-scale frontend architectures, mapping libraries or data visualization tools, modern testing frameworks and CI/CD practices, and background in geospatial technologies, remote sensing, or the defense and intelligence sector. This is a full-time, remote position based in the United States. If located near an office (San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, or The Netherlands), you are expected to work from that office 3 days per week. The role requires access to export-controlled information and contingent upon ability to access applicable export-controlled information without additional export licensing.
