New Relic is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Alerts team within the Applied Intelligence group. You'll work on backend services that ingest, persist, and retrieve signal data powering New Relic's alerting platform—a core component of one of the world's largest streaming data platforms.
In this role, you'll design and develop Java/Kotlin microservices handling high-volume telemetry and alerting workloads. You'll collaborate with product managers, frontend engineers, and infrastructure specialists to ship features that directly impact how customers detect and respond to system issues. Your work spans distributed data systems, high-throughput pipelines, and complex SQL optimization at scale.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, and deploy backend services in Java/Kotlin for high-volume telemetry processing
- Collaborate across teams (product, frontend, infrastructure) on feature design and architecture
- Implement new alerting features and retire technical debt
- Advocate for architecture improvements and articulate tradeoffs clearly
- Deploy code to production multiple times daily
- Contribute to code quality through peer reviews and technical documentation
- Participate in on-call rotation for team reliability and security
You'll bring 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, ideally in SaaS or product environments. Strong Java/Kotlin proficiency is essential, along with hands-on experience building multi-threaded services, working with relational databases at scale, and understanding distributed systems. You should have shipped reliable, high-throughput services to production and delivered APIs for internal or external customers.
Bonus experience includes AI/LLM development (prompt design, LLM API integration, RAG workflows, MCP servers), message queuing systems (Kafka, Flink, Spark Streaming, RabbitMQ), and agile environments with rapid iteration cycles.
New Relic emphasizes work-life balance with flexible time-off, ten weeks of paid parental leave, and volunteer time-off programs.
