IonQ is a leading quantum computing platform company (NYSE: IONQ) delivering integrated quantum solutions across computing, networking, sensing, and security. The company has achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity and set world records in quantum computing performance in 2025. IonQ's customers and partners include Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA, with applications spanning drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense.
The Senior Scientist role is within Applications R&D, a dedicated research organization focused on algorithms research rather than commercial delivery. This is a research and development position where you will develop fault-tolerant quantum algorithms and resource models that demonstrate where quantum approaches outperform classical methods. You will contribute to translating IonQ's hardware roadmap into applications that deliver real scientific and commercial value.
Key responsibilities include designing and analyzing fault-tolerant quantum algorithms, developing resource models and benchmarking methods, and helping shape which applications IonQ pursues as fault tolerance arrives. The role involves collaboration with the Applications R&D team to advance quantum algorithm research and establish performance baselines.
The position is based in either Bothell, WA or College Park, MD (IonQ's headquarters), with flexibility for hybrid or onsite work. Approximately 10% travel is expected for domestic and international engagement. This role is ideal for a senior-level researcher with deep expertise in quantum algorithms, fault tolerance, and computational complexity who wants to work on cutting-edge quantum computing challenges at a well-funded, publicly traded company.
