Discord is seeking a Senior Product Design Manager to lead the Growth design team, which owns the new user experience across discovery, sign-up, onboarding, notifications, and early engagement. You'll report to the Director of Product Design and manage a team of product designers working on acquisition, activation, and re-engagement initiatives.
Key responsibilities include leading and growing a design team across the full product development cycle from strategic visioning through launch and iteration. You'll inspire teams through strategic storytelling and vision sprints, turning complex problems into compelling product directions with experimentation proposals. The role requires balancing competing priorities between growth velocity, user value, and product quality while maintaining high design standards and moments of delight throughout the new-user journey.
You'll partner closely with cross-functional leaders in product, engineering, and data science to align on strategy and execution. A core part of the role is championing informed design through product design, user research, and data to help your team deeply understand both new and returning users. You'll foster a culture of creative excellence where designers feel empowered to tackle ambiguous problems with empathy and innovation.
Required qualifications include 10+ years of experience in scaled consumer-facing digital product design, ideally with growth, onboarding, acquisition, or lifecycle product experience. You need 4+ years of direct management experience leading design teams of 4 or more, with a proven track record of growing talent and building cultures of creative excellence. Strong ability to bring simplicity and clarity to complex problems, communicate compellingly to peers and executives, and operate comfortably in ambiguity while navigating tradeoffs between business goals and user value.
Bonus qualifications include personal Discord or gaming experience, familiarity with growth experimentation frameworks and data-driven design iteration, understanding of how products reach users across surfaces (notifications, search, onboarding, viral loops), and background in behavioral psychology or habit formation.
