Vox is seeking an experienced editor to lead its distinctive coverage of American politics and policy. This role oversees a team of 3-4 journalists who explore and explain politics, policy, and ideas for Vox's audience, with a focus on original reporting and analysis that helps readers understand what's at stake in the political landscape.
You will manage and lead the political reporting team, conceiving, assigning, and editing pieces that range from fast analysis tied to breaking news to longer-form features. Your responsibilities include guiding Vox's political coverage with a clear vision, staying attuned to daily news cycles while identifying fresh angles that differentiate Vox's coverage. You'll shape editorial strategy to ensure rigor, compelling narratives, and alignment with Vox's explanatory journalism mission.
Collaboration is central to this role. You'll work closely with Vox's other senior politics editor, cross-functional teams across the newsroom, and leadership including the executive editor and managing editor for audience and membership. You'll identify opportunities to elevate the team's work across audio, video, social platforms, and newsletters, ensuring the political report connects to Vox's broader membership strategy.
The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of editing experience with strong leadership and management skills. You should have excellent news judgment, the ability to bring sharp analysis to stories, and analytical rigor to pressure-test arguments and edit pieces that explain complex ideas while maintaining clarity. You're passionate about Vox's mission of making complex concepts accessible through explanatory journalism and are comfortable leading a diverse group of talented journalists in a fast-changing news environment.
This position is based in New York or Washington, D.C., and reports to the executive editor.
