Grafana Labs is hiring a Senior Platform Engineer to join the newly formed "Metal" squad within the Foundations group. This squad is responsible for building and provisioning infrastructure resources—storage, networking, and Kubernetes clusters—in new environments, starting with Grafana's own physical hardware. You will provide a Kubernetes control plane and underlying resources outside public cloud to the rest of the engineering organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Management of physical "Metal" environments from bare metal provisioning through Kubernetes orchestration
- Design and operation of cluster networking components including load balancing, NAT, DNS, CNIs, cross-cluster communication, and routing protocols
- Management of scheduling and autoscaling systems
- Maintenance of Crossplane compositions and Terraform modules for cloud service provider resources
- Version management and compatibility oversight for Crossplane and Terraform core and providers
- Collaboration with Grafana Cloud application teams to understand infrastructure needs and prioritize investments
You should have experience with distributed systems, datacenter operations, and on-call rotations. The role requires a holistic approach to development—from design documentation through integration testing and operational feedback. The Platform team primarily works with Go, Python, and Shell. You'll thrive in a remote-first, consensus-driven culture where communication and collaboration are essential. This is an opportunity to work on infrastructure that processes millions of metrics, logs, and traces per second, with ambitions to scale to hundreds of millions per second.
