Xero is seeking a Senior Payroll Manager to lead operational excellence of the payroll function across the APAC region (Australia, New Zealand, and Asia). Reporting to the GM of Payroll, you will oversee a diverse team of payroll professionals based in Melbourne and New Zealand, driving strategic initiatives while ensuring compliance with evolving legislative requirements. Key responsibilities include stabilizing and optimizing the recently implemented Ramco payroll system, preparing systems and teams for new Fair Work and ATO legislation (including payday super), and implementing automated integration solutions between Workday and payroll engines to reduce manual data entry. You will enhance process documentation, build governance frameworks, and partner closely with People Experience and Finance teams to support the end-to-end employee journey. The role emphasizes moving toward sophisticated validation models leveraging automation and AI, championing payroll governance, and supporting regional growth as Xero scales globally. You will foster a culture of coaching, empowerment, and psychological safety within your team while distilling complex payroll and tax information into actionable insights for diverse stakeholders. Required qualifications include deep understanding of Australian payroll legislation (Fair Work rules, long service leave, superannuation), proven ability to lead and coach other leaders with human-centric management, a mindset geared toward automation and systems integration, experience in fast-paced global organizations (ideally SaaS/tech), and strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration. The role operates on a hybrid model with flexibility for remote work and in-office boost days for team collaboration.
