Infleqtion is commercializing atom-based quantum computing products for sensing and computing applications. Within the Quantum Computing Product Group's Hardware Engineering Team, this Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer role focuses on designing and validating precision opto-mechanical subsystems that enable scalable, high-performance quantum hardware.
You will own opto-mechanical subsystems within established hardware architectures, identifying technical risks, trade-offs, and scalability constraints. Core responsibilities include mechanical design and integration of precision components—lasers, optics, vacuum-integrated components, advanced sensors (SPAD, EMCCD, sCMOS), high-speed photodetectors, DMDs, SLMs, AODs, EOMs, metasurface optics, and photonic integrated circuits. You'll translate experimental physics requirements into robust optical hardware, generate stability and tolerance budgets, and use high-fidelity simulations (FEA, Zemax) to characterize optical stability, drift, and noise sources.
Collaboration is central: you'll work closely with physicists and cross-disciplinary teams (optical, mechanical, electrical, software, systems engineers) across the full development lifecycle from research demonstrations through integrated, scalable systems. You'll advance design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly practices using data-driven methodologies, support the transition from research-grade to repeatable production-ready hardware, and provide technical leadership and mentorship to developing engineers through design reviews and hands-on coaching.
Required: Bachelor's in optical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or related field with 5+ years of relevant industry experience (Master's or PhD may substitute). Extensive ownership-driven experience designing, modeling, and validating laser-based opto-mechanical systems with strong hands-on laboratory track record. Proficiency in SolidWorks for complex system design and working knowledge of Zemax/OpticsStudio for optical collaboration.
Highly valued: background in atomic physics, quantum optics, or photonics research; experience in low-volume, high-complexity hardware programs; strong communication bridging physics and engineering; detail-oriented mindset with technical accountability; collaborative, mentoring-focused approach.
Up to 10% travel required. Work in office and laboratory environments with technical equipment including computers and lasers. Role may require access to U.S. export-controlled information (EAR/ITAR); employment offer may be conditioned on export authorization.
