Vital Bio is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join a small, cross-functional team designing and developing robotic instruments and life science instrumentation. You will work alongside Mechanical, Electrical, Software/Firmware Engineers, Consumables Engineers, and Scientists in a fast-paced, technically diverse environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, and verify robotic instruments and fluidic system interfaces
- Develop test methods, fixtures, and measurement tools to evaluate component and assembly performance
- Apply deep knowledge of machining and injection molding fabrication techniques; develop internal capabilities and vendor partnerships to optimize performance while maintaining scalability
- Implement DFX best practices (design for manufacturing, usability, reliability) on next-generation devices
- Generate requirements, design specifications, and test methods that drive product safety, performance, and durability
- Develop, implement, test, and document new solutions, processes, and designs per corporate standards
- Perform hands-on assembly and testing of equipment and devices for proof-of-concept, design development, pre-clinical, and validation activities
- Create and maintain SolidWorks CAD databases including assemblies, components, and detailed drawings
- Execute test methods to investigate and establish root cause of design, manufacturing, or material defects
- Research literature and prior art to inform design recommendations and architectures
- Observe clinical cases and interview clinical experts to inform designs
- Support pre-clinical and clinical labs
- Develop and document design and manufacturing procedures, assembly instructions, test methods, purchase specifications, BOMs, and component/assembly drawings
Required qualifications:
- BS or MS in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Biomedical Engineering
- 9+ years of experience in engineering product design of electromechanical hardware
- Independence in project execution from planning to results
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to determine testing strategy and methodologies
- Flexibility to multi-task and perform a wide range of activities
Preferred experience:
- Design of experiments
- Hands-on fixture and device design and development
- Medical robotics, life science tools, or diagnostics industry background
- ISO 9001 design control knowledge
- Rapid prototyping tools (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining)
- Test and measurement equipment proficiency (multimeters, oscilloscopes, force/temperature/pressure gauges, calipers, micrometers, dial indicators)
