Coinbase is building the future of institutional trading as part of the Everything Exchange, powering systems that enable the world's largest financial institutions to trade across markets with speed, depth, and trust. As a Senior Market Data Engineer on the Institutional Markets team, you will design, build, and operate the critical infrastructure that captures, normalizes, and distributes real-time market data across Coinbase at low latency. You will own the feed handlers, venue connectors, and distribution layers that form the backbone of a unified trading platform. Your responsibilities include building and maintaining market data components including feed handlers, normalization pipelines, and distribution systems; designing and implementing low-latency, high-throughput services for real-time market data consumed by trading systems; driving reliability and performance improvements through observability, on-call participation, and incident response; writing high-quality, well-tested code and contributing to engineering standards on a lean team; and partnering with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver market data capabilities supporting Coinbase's institutional trading roadmap. You will need 3+ years of backend engineering experience building and maintaining production low-latency systems, hands-on experience with at least one area of market data infrastructure (feed handlers, normalization, or distribution), proficiency in low-latency Java or C++ with familiarity with high-throughput messaging frameworks (Aeron, SBE, or similar), familiarity with venue/exchange connectivity and market data protocols (FIX, ITCH/OUCH, multicast), and a track record of shipping features end-to-end and operating what you build in production. Coinbase is a remote-first company with quarterly in-person working sessions called "surges."
