Rocket Lab is seeking an experienced Senior Manufacturing Engineer II with expertise in machining to join their Long Beach headquarters. This role focuses on machining development for the Rutherford engine (used on the 2nd most frequently launched US rocket) and the novel Archimedes engine platform.
Key responsibilities include:
- Contributing to design reviews as a subject matter expert in design for manufacturability, design for machining, productivity, and quality control
- Selecting, procuring, and installing machine shop equipment while developing maintenance and calibration plans
- Developing in-house machining capability for Archimedes components and implementing rapid iterations
- Designing, developing, and implementing tooling and equipment to improve quality, delivery, and cost performance in production environments
- Leading continuous improvement and cost reduction initiatives within the fabrication department
- Collaborating across Rocket Lab's global machine shops for capability alignment and support
- Mentoring and developing less experienced engineers and machinists
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical, aerospace, manufacturing engineering, or equivalent (or 12+ years of relevant experience in lieu of degree)
- 8+ years of machine shop experience
- Proficiency with CAM software and 3/5-axis CNC equipment
- Strong knowledge of GD&T and inspection methods
Desirable qualifications include capacity modeling, Lean/Six Sigma, 10+ years machine shop experience, 3D CAD and tooling design, turbomachinery/combustion component machining experience, post-processing/AM/welding familiarity, and NX CAM programming expertise.
The role involves occasional exposure to moderate noise, dust, and fumes in production areas.
