Ethos Life is a technology-driven life insurance company transforming how life insurance is bought, sold, and underwritten. The company operates a three-sided platform serving consumers, agents, and carriers, offering instant, accessible products with no medical exams required—just a few health questions.
As a Senior Life Underwriter, you will be a core member of a growing underwriting team at this insurtech startup. You'll evaluate insurance applications by assessing medical history, physical condition, occupational hazards, and financial backgrounds to determine whether to accept, modify, or decline risk. Your responsibilities include understanding underwriting policies and guidelines, communicating underwriting decisions clearly to stakeholders, and working independently on assigned cases with minimal direction.
You'll also play an active role in process improvement, championing changes that enhance efficiency while maintaining mortality expectations. The role values your ability to think critically, solve problems independently, and work comfortably with ambiguity in a collaborative, fast-moving environment.
Required qualifications: 5–7+ years of medical life/health underwriting experience, with US-based underwriting experience preferred. You should have demonstrated expertise in assessing Attending Physician Statements (APS) and Electronic Health Records (EHR), knowledge of medical/non-medical/financial risk selection, and experience underwriting both term and permanent life insurance products. Industry designations (LOMA, ALMI, FMLI, ALU, FALU) are preferred. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, verbal and written communication skills, and a collaborative mindset are essential.
