Pebl is a global employment platform that uses AI to help companies hire, pay, and manage employees across 185+ countries. The company is building Alfie, a conversational AI assistant, and seeking a Senior Frontend Software Engineer to lead the design and development of user-facing AI experiences.
In this role, you'll own the full-stack development of features for the conversational AI assistant, with primary focus and depth on the frontend and UX side. You'll apply hands-on experience with LLM-based and agentic systems—including prompt design, tool/function calling, multi-step agent reasoning, and evaluation—to shape both how the assistant behaves and how that behavior surfaces in the UI.
Key responsibilities include designing and building conversational AI interfaces that handle streaming responses, error recovery, fallback states, user trust, and human-in-the-loop moments. You'll bring product taste and strong opinions on what makes AI-driven experiences great, pushing for superior UX rather than shipping incremental solutions. You'll prototype and propose new interaction patterns as underlying models and agent capabilities evolve.
You'll work across the full stack (TypeScript/React frontend; backend services and APIs), lead by example in clean code, mentor junior engineers, and troubleshoot end-to-end issues including AI-specific failure modes. This is not a backend AI infrastructure, RAG platform, or internal automation role—the core need is driving the user-facing AI experience.
Required: 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated strength and clear preference for frontend/UX work. 1+ years of hands-on experience building LLM-powered or agentic products (not just API calls). Experience building interfaces for AI-powered products including conversational UIs, copilots, and assistants. Strong command of React/TypeScript, solid understanding of LLM design patterns and prompt engineering, and comfort working across the full stack when needed. A track record of building products with real craft and distinctive user experience. A lean mindset focused on customer value and rapid iteration.
The role requires in-office collaboration Monday–Wednesday in Palo Alto, CA.
