Instacart is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Shopper Activation & Engagement team, which owns critical moments in the shopper lifecycle including onboarding, activation, batch evaluation, compliance, earnings experiences, and platform engagement. You will manage a team of 10–12 engineers across mobile, backend, vendor-integrated systems, and engineering foundations, directly shaping shopper experience, supply quality, marketplace efficiency, and operational reliability. Key responsibilities include leading end-to-end team operations and roadmap execution across competing priorities—compliance deadlines, marketplace growth, vendor work, and engineering foundations. You will drive multi-quarter roadmap planning with hard regulatory and marketplace deadlines, requiring confident, decisive leadership. Deep cross-functional partnership is essential: you'll collaborate with Product, Design, Data, Legal/Compliance, Operations, Marketing, Logistics, Matching/Dispatch, Payments, Trust & Safety, and Customer Experience to align on high-impact work and negotiate tradeoffs transparently. You will develop and retain engineering talent, supporting senior engineers through career growth, performance management, and organizational change while building a culture rooted in velocity, iteration, and engineering excellence. You'll set technical direction for the team—improving reliability, observability, on-call hygiene, incident response, and post-incident learning—while advancing the team's ability to move faster through modern AI developer tools and AI-assisted engineering workflows. Required: 8+ years software engineering experience with 5+ years managing engineers (hiring, performance management, career development). You must have led product engineering teams across mobile, backend, and operationally sensitive systems with strong technical judgment in distributed systems, service ownership, reliability, and incident response. Demonstrated ability to define and deliver multi-quarter roadmaps across competing priorities, lead cross-functional planning with Product, Design, Legal/Compliance, and Operations, and manage broad ownership areas with legacy systems and ambiguous requirements. Strong people leadership track record retaining senior engineers through organizational change. Experience with modern AI developer tools or AI-assisted engineering workflows is required. Preferred: background in customer/shopper/workforce onboarding, activation, or trust surfaces; multi-sided marketplace systems (supply quality, availability, incentives, matching); mobile-heavy product areas; or AI/ML product integration.
