Bitwarden is building the leading open-source password management solution, protecting individuals and enterprises with strong credential security. As a Senior Rust Engineer on the Passkeys team, you will own the implementation of WebAuthn and FIDO2 standards—the technology moving the world beyond passwords.
You will design, build, and maintain Bitwarden's passkey implementation in Rust within a zero-knowledge, end-to-end encrypted architecture. This is precision systems engineering: implementing specifications where subtle misreadings cause credentials to fail on edge-case relying parties, all while ensuring private key material never reaches our servers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and maintain WebAuthn/FIDO2 implementation in Rust, covering credential creation, assertion, and encrypted storage
- Integrate passkey functionality across browser, desktop, and mobile platforms
- Develop and evolve the shared Rust SDK consumed by all Bitwarden clients, including language bindings and FFI
- Implement emerging standards for credential portability and secure import/export between providers
- Build interoperability testing against real-world relying parties, browsers, and platforms
- Become expert on Bitwarden APIs and zero-knowledge cryptographic architecture
- Independently plan, estimate, and deliver features and bug fixes
- Participate in code reviews and community contributions
You bring production Rust expertise including library design, language bindings, and FFI. You have experience implementing standards from specifications with rigorous attention to edge cases and real-world testing. You understand applied cryptography—public key systems, signatures, key handling—and know where the sharp edges are. You write readable, testable code with a rigorous approach to correctness in security-sensitive systems. Experience with AI tooling (Claude preferred), Electron, TypeScript, and cross-platform desktop development is valued. You're collaborative, adaptable, and passionate about open source and internet security.
This role offers the opportunity to shape Bitwarden's India Engineering Center of Excellence from the ground up, working alongside talented global teams on meaningful security challenges that impact millions of users worldwide.
