Freenome is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Research Engineer to develop and deploy cutting-edge bioinformatics research software and tooling for their computational platform. You will work at the intersection of computational biology, machine learning, software engineering, and biological data to advance early cancer diagnosis through liquid biopsy research.
In this role, you will lead the development of Freenome's bioinformatics research engineering framework and internal tools, building for significant growth as the company transitions from research to product development. Key responsibilities include engineering robust and reproducible data pipelines for liquid biopsy research, managing and integrating data sources across laboratory, bioinformatics, and clinical domains to enable advanced multiomic analysis, and improving the reliability and scalability of the science platform.
You will collaborate closely with computational biologists, machine learning scientists, and software engineers in an interdisciplinary R&D environment. The role involves developing software and workflows that support both research and production bioinformatics, enabling data-driven science discoveries in biology and healthcare.
Required qualifications include a PhD in a quantitative field (computational biology, cancer biology, statistics, bioinformatics, computer science) or equivalent experience with a B.S./M.S. You must have 4+ years of bioinformatics infrastructure, automation, and software engineering experience, with a robust history of delivering major technical projects. Strong programming skills in Python or equivalent are essential, along with experience in NGS data analysis, bioinformatic pipelines, containerized cloud computing (Docker in GCP/Azure/AWS), and production software engineering practices including automated testing, version control, and deployment systems. Fundamental understanding of bioinformatics, molecular/cancer biology, and regulatory processes is required, along with demonstrated ability to partner with laboratory and computational scientists in a highly cross-functional environment.
The role reports to the Director of Bioinformatics Research Engineering and is based in Brisbane, California with hybrid flexibility (2-3 days per week in office) or fully remote options.
