Heidi Health is building AI-powered clinical automation to reduce administrative burden on healthcare providers. The company has achieved product-market fit with a medical scribe product and now processes over 2.5 million patient sessions weekly across 190+ countries.
As a Senior Automation Engineer, you will design and build Heidi's deterministic automation engine for Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems that lack native API integrations. This is a code-first role focused on building reliable, production-grade automation rather than configuring low-code platforms.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and maintain the UI-automation layer that interacts with EHRs through accessibility-tree mapping, templated field entry, and structured data write-back across web and desktop systems
- Implement patient-matching and validation logic ensuring data lands on correct patient records with patient safety as a non-negotiable constraint
- Build work queues, retries, and exception handling so automations run unattended with explainable failures
- Prototype with AI-assisted tools (Claude, Cursor) to ship quickly, then harden into production-grade code
- Embed with health systems during live rollouts to map real workflows and close gaps
- Harden flows against UI drift and edge cases, deciding with Product teams whether automation or native integration is the right approach
- Instrument runs, measure reliability, and own tooling and documentation for extending the engine to new EHRs
Required qualifications:
- Proven track record building tools or automations that solved real problems (portfolio/GitHub preferred over CV years)
- Production experience with UI automation frameworks (Playwright, FlaUI, or RPA platforms)
- Python as primary language; C# or TypeScript as bonus
- Deep understanding of deterministic systems: queues, retries, idempotency, exception handling
- Comfort with brittle, undocumented legacy third-party interfaces
- Working fluency with LLM APIs and AI-assisted development with shipped examples
- Data and application security knowledge, particularly for handling patient data safely
- Willingness to work directly with customers and field teams during deployments
- Experience automating regulated, high-stakes systems (healthcare, payments, banking) is a strong signal
The role emphasizes ownership, problem-solving, and shipping reliable systems for the next decade rather than optimizing for quarterly metrics.
