Sequencing is seeking a Senior Applied AI Bioinformatician to discover and prove new genetically enabled capabilities for its AI products and intelligence layer. This is a hands-on senior individual-contributor role reporting to the Senior Director of AI & Emerging Technologies. You will explore novel ways to combine genetic data, scientific knowledge, retrieval tools, computational methods, and AI reasoning to create capabilities not currently possible. This includes developing new bioinformatics skills, genomic retrieval or interpretation components, and evidence-synthesis workflows that expand Sequencing's AI product capabilities. Key responsibilities include: taking promising ideas from scientific hypothesis through working prototype; defining user value, required data, genetic premise, scientific uncertainty, and evaluation plans for each proposed capability; partnering with Product and Engineering to validate and scale ideas; and creating evidence packages for independent evaluation and productionization. You will own a portfolio of bounded exploratory projects, develop scientific hypotheses connecting user needs to genetic premises, build hands-on prototypes combining genomic data and AI reasoning, establish explicit uncertainty boundaries and failure modes, diagnose failures across data, bioinformatics, retrieval, and model reasoning, and hand off evidence-backed capabilities for independent evaluation. Critically, you will NOT own ongoing production model quality, benchmark datasets, independent scientific evaluation, release readiness, or production reliability—these remain with the Bioinformatics team. You bring deep professional expertise in bioinformatics, computational genomics, statistical genetics, or related fields. You can evaluate genetic premises, evidence quality, and limitations. You build hands-on with modern AI tools (models, agents, retrieval, tools, structured data, computational pipelines) and understand the difference between using AI and building reliable AI systems. You design reproducible experiments with explicit success criteria and negative controls, communicate scientific complexity clearly to non-scientists, and welcome independent review. You are energized by 0-to-1 exploration and evidence-backed handoffs rather than ongoing production ownership. Helpful experience includes consumer or clinical genomics, variant interpretation, polygenic risk, pharmacogenomics, genomic knowledge systems, production LLM evaluation, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic systems, scientific tool use, translating research prototypes into reliable products, and health-product safety or regulated environments. Fully remote role based in the United States. Benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) with company matching; PTO and paid volunteer time off; home office stipend; parental bonding leave; and clinical-grade whole genome sequencing for you and your family.
