Encord is building the universal data layer for AI, helping 300+ AI teams train and run models on the right data. The platform indexes, curates, annotates, and evaluates data across the full AI lifecycle. Backed by $60M in Series C funding from Wellington Management, CRV, Next47, and Y Combinator, the company serves customers including Woven by Toyota, AXA, UiPath, and Zipline. As Learning Design Lead, you will establish the instructional design foundation for Encord's annotator hiring and onboarding pipeline. Currently, annotator training and screening are handled ad hoc with no formal instructional design expertise. This foundational hire will design training modules that enable annotators to learn tasks efficiently with minimal hand-holding, and create screening assessments rigorous enough to reliably separate high performers from those who won't succeed in production. Key responsibilities include: - Design and build training modules that teach annotation tasks clearly and efficiently - Create screening/assessment modules calibrated to predict on-the-job performance - Define grading criteria and pass/fail thresholds for assessments, establishing methodology from scratch - Use production performance data to validate and continuously refine training and screening content - Partner with the Data Strategy team to automate the end-to-end annotator hiring pipeline You'll bring 5–6+ years of professional experience with at least 2+ years in instructional design, curriculum development, assessment design, or EdTech. You have strong grounding in learning science and assessment design, including rubric design, item difficulty calibration, and validity of cutoff scores. You've built training or certification content that measurably improved learner readiness and ideally have experience designing assessments that predict on-the-job performance in operational or workforce-training settings. Bonus qualifications include EdTech company background, corporate L&D experience, familiarity with data annotation workflows, or experience designing/scaling hiring pipelines. You're comfortable operating without an established playbook and are data-driven, validating content through real production signals rather than intuition. Encord offers competitive salary with meaningful equity, clear growth opportunities, 4 days/week in-office culture, flexible PTO, annual L&D budget, comprehensive health coverage, and bi-annual company offsites.
