DeepL is seeking a Japanese Language Specialist to join its Research and Product teams. This role sits at the intersection of linguistics and AI product development, where you'll shape how DeepL's translation and language AI platform understands and produces Japanese. You will serve as a linguistic consultant across the company, working with stakeholders in Research, Product, Sales, and beyond. Key responsibilities include testing and evaluating DeepL's products and features pre- and post-launch; assessing linguistic quality of data generated by humans and machines; designing tests to identify qualified freelance linguists; evaluating freelancer work and providing actionable feedback; investigating user language complaints with linguistic analysis; and partnering on experiment design to inform testing and measurement strategies. You'll work with complex, ambiguous language data in Japanese and at least one foreign language. A core part of the role is explaining linguistic phenomena to diverse audiences—from non-linguists to fellow researchers—and experimenting with AI tools to accelerate team processes. Required qualifications: native or near-native Japanese proficiency with deep cultural and professional context (typically from education or substantial work experience in Japan); C1+ English fluency; Bachelor's degree in linguistics, translation, foreign languages, language teaching, or related field; minimum 2 years in translation, localization, linguistics, education, or related work; demonstrated ability to simplify complex linguistic concepts; deep knowledge of Japanese linguistic resources; expert understanding of research best practices; experience identifying machine translation error patterns; exceptional written and spoken communication; experience with AI prompting, LLMs, NLP, or AI-led workflows; comfort in dynamic, adaptive environments; ability to work independently and collaboratively. DeepL offers a diverse, internationally distributed team (90+ nationalities across UK, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, US, and Japan); open communication and regular feedback culture; and hybrid work arrangement in Tokyo.
